Jessica Soares is a self-taught contemporary artist born in Lagos, Nigeria. She has learnt to develop and build her works through different art media. Her works express her love for hair and the struggles she faced having to grow hair as a child. What drives her as an artist is to be able to create pieces that initiate conversations or raise conversations between the viewers of what the artist’s thought-process was while creating the piece or questions that would normally be avoided. Ankara has become an important element of her work, more like an identity, a connecting force that binds all humans together irrespective of race. Her work allows her to interpret patterns, lines, texture and alignments just by letting her hand move in its own directions. All these are reflective in her abstract works contributing to the story being told. Her works are vibrant, and as an artist who is proficient with many media, her styles are not limited and are vast. Her inspirations are constantly evolving. Her pieces are intentional, making viewers stop and engage on a deeper level, Art for her is one of the necessities of life connecting all human races as one.
